A Day Trip to Lake Bled: Is It Worth It?

If you're visiting Ljubljana, Slovenia, and have an extra day, Lake Bled is one of those places I'd seriously consider adding to your itinerary.

It's the kind of destination that looks almost too perfect in photos. An emerald green lake, a tiny island with a church, a medieval castle perched above the water, and the Julian Alps in the background. And yes, it really does look like that in person.

Getting There From Ljubljana

Lake Bled is about an hour from Ljubljana by car, making it an easy day trip. You can rent a car, take public transportation, or make things simple and book an organized tour.

For a first time visit, I really like the organized tour option. You don't have to worry about driving, parking, figuring out transportation, or trying to fit everything into one day.

The Tour I'd Recommend

If you're looking for an easy way to experience Lake Bled from Ljubljana, this Lake Bled Day Tour through GetYourGuide is a great option.

The tour is about six hours and includes transportation in an air conditioned vehicle, a stop at Bled Castle, time to explore Lake Bled, and the option to take a traditional Pletna boat to Bled Island. This current tour is rated 4.8 out of 5 based on more than 800 reviews.

*The Pletna boat and Bled Castle entrance are optional extras, so you'll want to factor those into your budget if you want to do both.

What Will You Do in Bled?

There's plenty to see without feeling like you have to rush around all day.

Bled Castle sits high above the lake and gives you some pretty incredible views.

Bled Island is the little island you've probably seen in photos. You can take a traditional Pletna boat across the lake and climb the famous 99 steps to the church.

You can also simply walk along the lake, take in the scenery, grab something to eat, or find a café and try kremšnita, the traditional Bled cream cake.

And if you're feeling a little more adventurous, there are opportunities for hiking and viewpoints around the lake.

Is a Day Trip Enough?

For most first time visitors, yes.

You won't see every corner of the area in one day, but you can experience the highlights without needing to change hotels or rearrange your entire trip.

If you have more time, you could easily turn Lake Bled into an overnight stay and explore more of the surrounding Julian Alps.

My Take

Lake Bled is one of those places that's popular for a reason. It's beautiful, it's easy to reach from Ljubljana, and you can experience a lot without spending several days there.

If you're already planning a trip to Slovenia, I'd definitely consider adding it to the itinerary.
